Tokyo: cherry first flowering · 2026 reporting season
Tokyo’s 2026 first-flowering record becomes more useful when read with its full-bloom partner. The two observations show a 9-day interval; they do not describe the length of a viewing season.
The first milestone was not the peak milestone
Tokyo was the earliest opener among these six records. Full bloom was recorded nine days later. A reader who treats 19 March as a ready-made “best viewing day” would collapse two different observations and lose the most useful information in the pair.

Read the normal comparison separately
JMA’s 2026 table puts this first-flowering observation 5 days earlier than its listed normal first-flowering date of 24 March.

Compare places, then calendars
Tokyo led Kyoto by four days at first flowering but by two days at full bloom. That shrinking gap is a reason to examine paired milestones rather than shift another city’s entire season by one fixed number of days. It is arithmetic from the sample, not a weather explanation.

Official reporting season: 2026 Station: Tokyo (東京) Observed phase: first flowering (開花) Observation cell: 3月19日 Observed date: 2026-03-19 Source: https://www.data.jma.go.jp/sakura/data/sakura_kaika.html The date comes from the observed-date column, not the normal or previous-year columns. The reporting year is verified against the visible h1 and page title; the stale table summary attribute is ignored. Station code 662 and the reviewed English station label are carried over from the exact Japanese station identity in the historical baseline; the current HTML identifies stations by name. GIZUMO selected six stations, rendered the two phase labels in English and normalized observed dates. No source metadata-update timestamp is supplied for individual observations. HTTP retrieval or Last-Modified times are not observation dates. These are past observations in the current reporting-season table, not live tourist-location conditions or forecasts. A zero in the separately preserved cumulative CSV does not establish that this HTML source has no current-year observation.
